Singularity rendezvoused with the Polydectes this
morning; I guess Rocky was trying to be funny setting the location in a crater
of some sort. The damn thing was more than large enough to accommodate the two
craft side by side, or would have been if the dumb pilot had not parked smack in
the centre of it. Still I guess I shouldn’t blame it on the Poly’s pilot, more
than likely Rocky had ordered that crate put down dead centre.
Perhaps because I was incensed by the Poly’s position I
chose to put down on her starboard side in spite of the outcropping of rock
there, I could tell the Captain wasn’t pleased with my decision though he only
cleared his throat when he realized my intended landing site. Still I got the
ship down in one peace with several meters clearance on each side, though I was
forced to roll her to port at almost a 45 degree angle to avoid the outcropping
about half way down.
The crews met between the two ships; M4rb and Rocky shook
hands and exchanged a few words before making the official handover. I nodded a
polite greeting to the Poly’s crew and Rocky glanced at me then looked at the
outcropping shaking his head.
I had a hard time restraining myself regarding the Poly’s
Pilot; he had been shifting his gaze from Singularity, to the outcrop of rock,
to me and back again, with his mouth wide open as though trying to catch flies.
I almost laughed in his face when he came to attention and snapped off a
military style salute to me, though I admit his blatant display of admiration
towards me made me feel uncomfortable.
I recognized him of course; he had been one of the
trainees I had in my care during my convalescence, more importantly one of the
ones who seemed to follow the fool before I had him removed from the program.
I could see Rocky, M4rb and Polosleor out of the corner
of my eyes obviously enjoying my discomfort. At a loss for anything else to do I
nodded to the pilot saying, “Congratulations on getting your flight status
pilot.” (I couldn’t remember his name.)
I think on reflection I would have done better not to
acknowledge him, since he brought himself to an even more ridged attention if
that were possible; and started talking so fast his words seemed to tumble over
themselves. “Thank you Ma’am, it was a pleasure to see you in action ma’am, glad
you made it back to flight duty ma’am, an honor to…” and so on, I just wanted
him to shut up.
Trust Rocky to milk it for all it was worth, he waited
until he saw me tense up and curl my hands into fists ready to knock the little
twit out before he ushered his crew back aboard the Poly.
In a way I feel sorry for that pilot, I doubt Rocky will
give him a moments peace without ribbing him over the encounter. I would be
surprised if he doesn’t request a transfer off the Poly the moment it puts in at
Zero One.
I was last to board Singularity behind WiredNight who
stopped just before stepping over the threshold into the ship and saluted M4rb,
“Permission to come aboard sir.”
M4rb returned the salute before replying, “Granted.” And
with a grin nodded at Eminition, “Em will show you to your quarters, we’ll be
under way in about 20 minutes. Bit wants to run a systems check before taking
off.”
I hung back and secured the entryway, and caught Syn our
Reactor Expert as she went to her post, “Hey Syn, I am going to run a system
check before we take off, but I’ll need all the power you can give me when we
launch.”
She glanced at me then at the retreating backs of
Polosleor and M4rb, “They did seem to enjoy your discomfort a little too much
didn’t they?” She replied with a grin, “Reactor ‘ll be ready when you need it.”
I turned and followed the two reprobates with long
strides; coming up behind them I placed my hands on their shoulders taking care
to dig my nails into the nerve centre just in front of the joint, and asking
quite pleasantly if they enjoyed themselves before easing past them and
continuing on to my station. Just as I reached the next intersection I heard
Polo say something along the lines of, “I’d better go warn WireNight.”
